| I Talked to Avey Tare at the Brooklyn Bowl round robin show tonight and he said that they have a new ep coming. My ears really hurt and when I asked him if "from a beach" and "grace" were on the ep he nodded so i assume those are both confirmed. I also think I heard him say they were going to support the ep on tour but I couldn't hear very well either. |

Is grass considered an EP or a single?
Because if they release it brother sport on it would it be considered Brother sport single plus bonus tracks. Just like they did with Grass. |

I think the difference will be that Grass only had three tracks whereas Brother Sport is meant to have four, making it an EP. |

WTF? The number of songs doesn't determine whether or not it's an EP.
EP stands for Extended Play, which was originally used as a way to differentiate 45 RPM 12" records from 33 RPM 12" records (LP, or Long Play). Typically, an EP is designated by length. Anything that would not fit on a 7" or 12" single (called "singles" because they had one song on each side) would be designated an EP, pressed on a 12" and sold for more money. |

| While you're mostly right mildew, I believe the UK and perhaps other places do have protocol on what you can or can't call an EP or a Single based on the number of tracks |

No, they don't.
First, it doesn't make any sense. Is Jethro Tull's "Thick As A Brick" a single? It's only one song, but it's over 40 minutes long. Having any kind of official protocol based on number of songs is ridiculous.
Second, these terms originated in the 50's, when music was sold in 3 formats: 7" singles, 12" EPs, and 12" LPs. The term "singles" began as a slang term for a 45rpm record with a single song on each side. Before CD singles were around, anything that exceeded the 7 minute barrier on each side of a 7" single would be put on a 12" EP. 12" singles didn't begin to creep out until the late 70's, when mastering engineers started figuring out that having faster speeds and incredibly wide azimuths would result in more extreme frequency response...hence "club singles" with heavy bass. |

I don't know why but there was some kind of issue with Frances The Mute by The Mars Volta, and they had to split the final track into 5 parts so it was not considered an EP.
Also found this:
"In the United Kingdom, the Official Chart Company defines a cut off between EP and album classification at 25 minutes length or four tracks (plus alternative versions of featured songs)"
Either way, the grass single has pretty average length tracks, so is still a single. Sorry? :/ |

The "Frances The Mute" thing had nothing to do with the UK's rules on EP length. It was due to a dispute with Universal Records.
That quote you got from Wikipedia is reflective of a very recent change put into play by the OCC effectively grouping EPs and singles into the same group for the purpose of charting sales. The quote itself is misleading, as it is by no means a "protocol" for classification.
Never said the Grass single wasn't a single...that's not what was in dispute, sailor. |
